Announcing the OCP Data Center Sustainability Standard Initiative

March 8th, 2018

As Northshore's Founding Director of Engineering, I am pleased to announce the formation of the OCP Data Center Sustainability Initiative. The OCP Data Center Sustainability Initiative (OCP DCSS) is designed to empower the industry to collaboratively optimize the performance of all our data center infrastructure by working together and sharing critical information.

Data Centers are Not Silos

In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that the siloed nature of how we analyze, design, construct, and operate data centers must be broken.

Right now, the art of data center optimization is a cluster of wrangling one-off datasets and incompatible software platforms. More broadly, our tools aren't yet capable of extracting any of the trended BMS/EPMS/DCIM data to calibrate analytical models, system-wide.

In short, the process of how we collect, organize, and maintain data center information is unsustainable. It takes too long with too many redundancies. Wheels are getting reinvented over and over again.

Information Must Be Shared

Our Initiative Will Focus On:

  1. FACILITATE COMMUNICATION between BIM models and other platforms, including BMS Analytics and CFD by developing OCP BIM Standardization Parameters.

  2. CREATE open-sourced and coordinated CAD libraries to accelerate the building information modeling process.

  3. DEVELOP an algorithm to automatically extract trended BMS/EPMS/DCIM data to calibrate our analytical models.

  4. FORMALIZE the M&V protocol for updating as-built BIM models with the use of Matterport-generated point clouds.

  5. STANDARDIZE a rating system and methodology comparable to ASRHRAE 90.1 or LEED that is sophisticated enough to capture the uniqueness and complexity of data centers. We want this system to be designed by industry professionals and nuanced enough to differentiate between different data center types.

On March 22nd, I will bring the Data Center Sustainability initiative to the OCP U.S. Summit in San Jose. If you are going to be there be sure to introduce yourself!

As is true of any open-sourced endeavor, the success of our plan to standardize this critical industry will require lots of help. To get involved and stay up-to-date on our latest developments, please register below.
